Getting ahead: roadmaps beyond driving

Four routes from a driver or side job to a qualified job, and how to stay in Germany.

Driving for a ride-hailing app is usually a bridge, not a career: the pay is under pressure, the market is inspected often, and the job does not build towards a residence permit for the long term. What comes next depends on three things: do you have a degree or trade qualification, which permit do you hold, and how much German do you speak. General information only; check every permit change with the immigration office (LEA) first.

Step 1 for everybody: German and free advice

• German B1, then B2 opens almost every route below. Vocational language courses (Berufssprachkurse, DeuFöV) are run through BAMF; priority rules apply since 1 January 2025.
• Integration course (§ 44 AufenthG): a right mainly for holders of a residence permit for employment. Students and others depend on discretion, and in 2026 BAMF stopped admitting such cases (press report; check with BAMF).
• Free counselling in Berlin: Willkommenszentrum (advice and recognition, in English), recognition counselling (anerkennung-in-deutschland.de), migration counselling for adults from age 27 (MBE, free, English at several providers), Employment Agency or Jobcenter (training vouchers).

Which route fits?

A. Back to a qualified job (degree holders)

1. Check your degree: anabin or a ZAB statement (Recognition). Fee €200, then €100.
2. IT: the experience route (§ 19c (2) AufenthG, § 6 BeschV) needs no German recognition: 2 years of experience in the last 5, salary at least €45,630 in 2026.
3. Blue Card: €50,700, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and recent graduates (details).
4. Just finished a German degree: 18 months to look for a job (§ 20). Any job is allowed while you search, so a driving job does not end your search rights.
5. Opportunity Card holders: 20 hours a week of side work is allowed; a follow-up card needs a job offer and approval of the Federal Employment Agency (details).

Realistic timeline: German B1 plus recognition and applications take about 6 to 18 months (our estimate, no source). Reduce driving hours instead of quitting, keep to your permit's limits.

B. Professional driver or bus driver

• Qualification (BKrFQG): accelerated basic qualification of 140 hours plus an exam, or a 3-year training. Then 35 hours of further training every 5 years.
• Licence: the Indian licence cannot be exchanged without tests (Driving in Berlin). For truck (C/CE) or bus (D) you normally take the German licence anew.
• Bus (BVG): BVG recruits bus drivers; it needs class D or D95 and German. Pay under the Berlin transport collective agreement (TV-N) and current conditions: check the BVG career page; we found no verified figure.
• Cost: licence and qualification run to several thousand euros (no verified price). Funding: training voucher from the Employment Agency or Jobcenter (§ 81 SGB III), employee funding (§ 82 SGB III), employers and, for firms, a federal toll-revenue programme. Since 1 July 2026 the new basic income (Grundsicherung) puts placement in work first, so funded training through the Jobcenter can be harder to get.
• Demand: professional drivers appear in the Federal Employment Agency's shortage analysis (2024). Berlin-specific numbers not verified.
• Permit: § 24a BeschV covers entry from abroad. Whether a student or Opportunity Card holder can switch inside Germany to this work is not verified. Ask LEA before you sign anything.

C. Ausbildung or completion exam

• Ausbildung (§ 16a AufenthG) is possible from inside Germany. Side job up to 20 hours a week. Money and German level; the training employer decides the German level in practice.
• Options that often have vacancies: warehouse logistics, motor-vehicle mechatronics, care (Pflege; German B2 required in Berlin: secondary source), and driving instructor (FahrlG § 2 sets conditions).
• Completion exam without training (Externenprüfung, § 45 (2) BBiG): lets adults with work experience sit the chamber exam. The required length of experience and the German needed: ask IHK Berlin.

D. Your own ride-hailing company

• Permit under § 49 PBefG from the licensing office (LABO): professional-knowledge exam at IHK Berlin, proof of reliability and financial capacity, a business address that meets the return rule.
• Residence permit for the self-employed (§ 21 AufenthG): needs an economic interest and a viable business concept.
• Caution: the Berlin market is under price pressure and frequent inspection (see Driving in Berlin). We advise route D only after IHK training and a written calculation. No verified market data.

Staying in Germany long term

• Settlement permit (§ 9): 5 years, 60 months of pension contributions, secure income, German B1. Skilled workers can get it faster (Blue Card: 27 or 21 months).
• Citizenship (StAG § 10): 5 years. The 3-year fast track was abolished on 30 October 2025.
• Benefits and undeclared work harm both applications. Reliable contributions matter more than the job title.
• India does not allow dual citizenship (secondary source). Taking German citizenship usually means giving up Indian citizenship; the OCI card is the substitute. Check this with a lawyer before you apply.

What to do this month

1. Book a free session at the Willkommenszentrum or an MBE counsellor.
2. Enrol in a German course (B1 as the first goal).
3. Keep contract, payslips and hour logs (Already in Berlin?).
4. If you have a degree: start the recognition check now, it takes months.
