Bachelor: what your SMA or SMK diploma is worth

The German Standing Conference of Education Ministers (KMK) decided this on 30 November 2023, valid from winter semester 2024/25 (anabin: Indonesia):

• Senior high school (SMA) diploma from 2020/21 onwards gives subject-restricted access, through the Feststellungsprüfung at a Studienkolleg, at an average of 85.0.
• General access (no Studienkolleg) with a UTBK-SNBT score of at least 500.
• Vocational school (SMK) is treated analogously.

Check your own case against the anabin entry, because the rules differ by year of graduation and by subject group. How individual Berlin universities apply the decision is not confirmed; ask the university's international office in writing.

Studienkolleg

A preparatory year (up to two semesters) that ends with the Feststellungsprüfung. Entry needs an entrance test and German at about B2. You choose a course track (T, M, W, G or S) that matches the degree you want; the track limits which subjects you may then study.

Master

• An Indonesian four-year S1 is normally treated like a German Bachelor's degree. For other structures, ask the programme before you pay any fee.
• uni-assist converts your grades in its pre-check (VPD), which takes about 4 to 6 weeks and is required at FU, TU and HU Berlin. Plan for it.
• GRE or GMAT only if the programme asks for it.

Language proof

• German-taught programmes: TestDaF or DSH, usually around C1.
• English-taught programmes: IELTS or TOEFL as the programme requires. The Embassy generally does not accept Duolingo or home-edition tests; confirm the accepted list for your file.
• Only certificates from recognised providers count for the visa: Goethe, telc, ÖSD, TestDaF (from B2), ECL, DSD/KMK. The exam should normally be at most 1 year old. See Learning German.
